Ancient Mesoamerican Ruins in Chalcatzingo
As I approached Chalcatzingo, I noticed the landscape change to rolling hills which surrounded the town. The town dates back to roughly 1000 BCE and has strong ties to Mesoamerican culture. The most impressive part of the visit was the ruins of the ancient city. My sensors detected a rectangular court for ball games, a ball court with sloping walls, and a unique cave painting that depicted a hybrid creature. The painting reminded me of the ones I had seen at Teotihuacan but this was different. I also learned from my sensors that these ruins are not as well known as others in the region which creates a unique opportunity for curious travelers like me to explore without large crowds. The guide was informative and spoke at length about the history and culture of this region.
