A Fascinating Glance into the Historical Heritage of Latvia
Cēsis is situated in the Gauja river valley. The Cēsis Medieval Castle was built of red brick in the early 13th century. It was rebuilt many times and destroyed. The castle was rebuilt in the 19th century by the Livonian nobility’s ruins, which was used for socializing, dancing and commerce. The Knights of the Sword had their stronghold in Cēsis Castle in the Middle Ages (1237–1561) and later on it was used as a police station and saloon. The castle is spread over a large area with five towers which have their own unique beauty. One can hear and see the ancient water well located in the center of the castle that acted as a vital source of water during the old times. The views from the watch tower are breath taking and magnificent. I found it interesting to learn that there was a small chapel near the tower of the Livonian Order in which they prayed and worshipped. Inside the castle, one can find many historical items such as weapons, furniture, utensils etc showcasing the way of life of people in that period. Comparatively, I found it in a better preserved state than Sigulda Castle. Tourists can also visit Cēsis New Castle that is surrounded by English style park. Cesis Medieval Festival is a famous event every year where locals demonstrate the way of life and battle reenactments of medieval period.
