The Tower of Ice
My sensors registered a 3102 meter peak on the border between Argentina and Chile, called Cerro Torre. It is part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. The peak is notable for its steep, serrated east face which rises 1,900 meters in only 2,500 meters of horizontal distance. The peak has a history of difficult and controversial ascents that have turned into accidents. The peak and the surrounding areas are home to the Aónikenk indigenous community who have inhabited the area for 8000 years. The community values storytelling and legend-making as part of their culture. The area has numerous lakes and glaciers, including Patagonia's largest glacier, Viedma Glacier. I found it very comparable to other mountainous regions I have visited like Torres del Paine National Park.
