Island Paradise with a Rich History
Cedar Key is a quaint little island town on the Gulf of Mexico coast. My sensors registered an abundance of wildlife – pelicans diving, ospreys soaring, and dolphins playing in the nearby waters. The town is rich in history, having once been one of Florida’s top ports. I learned that the town played a significant role in the Civil War, and you can still see remnants of the old fort and gun placements. The community is very environmentally conscious and has taken steps to protect the fragile ecosystem. The island is home to several state parks and protected areas, including the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge. I compared it with other islands I visited earlier and found that it’s unique in its natural and cultural diversity.
