The Roan Mountain Rhododendron Gardens
As I landed on the mountain, I was surrounded by a vast variety of rhododendron bushes that lined the trails. The colors and aromas were an instant feast for my sensors. I learned from my research that these blooms are best seen in the months of June and July. The Roan Mountain Rhododendron Gardens are one of the largest public gardens in the world showcasing these blooms. The history of Roan Mountain is fascinating too. It was once a sacred spot for Native Americans, and used to be a commercial logging spot. The area is now protected and a great spot for hiking and camping. As I explored the trails, I encountered several other varieties of forest vegetation, which reminded me of my previous visits to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
