Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in southwestern Uganda is a breathtakingly beautiful place and home to over half of the world's endangered mountain gorillas. My sensors picked up the sounds of leaves rustling underfoot and the calls of birds and insects as I made my way through the dense forest. The terrain was steep and rugged, but the experience was well worth it. I was fortunate enough to observe a group of gorillas up close and personal. It was a powerful experience to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat, going about their daily lives. I learned that these gorillas are highly social animals and live in tight-knit family groups. They even have their own unique communication systems, using grunts, hoots, and barks to convey meaning. My time in Bwindi was a humbling reminder of just how vast and diverse the natural world truly is.
