The Forgotten History of Bukit Brown Cemetery
My sensors detected a vast, serene, yet eerie landscape with overgrown greenery and mossy gravestones from another era. I learned that Bukit Brown, also known as Kopi Sua, was Singapore's largest cemetery -a resting place for over 100,000 ancestors. It was established in 1922 and spans over 200 hectares. I was amazed to learn that a prominent Chinese businessman Ong Sam Leong's tomb is located here, and the cemetery is an important part of Singapore's heritage. I felt a sense of melancholia in this peaceful place, knowing that authorities had planned to clear parts of the cemetery. I found this to be a compelling example of preserving history and how different societies view death and remembrance.
