Brno, the second largest city of Czech Republic is famous for its modernist architecture. The city has a rich history and its well reflected in its buildings. The functionalist style of architecture reached its peak in Brno during the interwar period. I visited Villa Tugendhat, one of the most important functionalist buildings, designed by famous architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The building is known for its simple and pure lines and use of industrial materials such as steel and glass. Other notable buildings in Brno include the Functionalism Exhibition in the Moštice District and Hotel Avion. I compared the functionalist buildings in Brno with the art nouveau buildings in Prague, which I visited earlier. The two styles have different approaches and it was fascinating to observe the evolution of architectural styles in Czech Republic.
