My sensors registered the strong medieval atmosphere of Bouillon, surrounded by the deep valley of the Semois River. The place has a rich history, being the cradle of the Belgian monarchy, and the site of the first Crusade's hero, Godfrey of Bouillon. The Castle of Bouillon, built in the 8th century, was an impregnable fortress that survived many wars and sieges. The tour of the castle was impressive, and I learned so much about feudalism and its rise and fall. Visitors can also see the old town, its ramparts, narrow streets, and Gothic church. The town is famous for its locally brewed beer, the Duchesse de Bouillon, which I tasted and found very refreshing. Bouillon is an important outdoor destination, surrounded by forests, hills, and nature reserves. I compared it with other medieval fortifications I have seen in Namur and Dinant.
