My sensors registered a vast plain of snow-white salt that stretched unbroken to the horizon. The salt flats covered an area of over 46 square miles. They are so flat and reflective that they were used to calibrate the first satellite images of Earth. The history of the flats dates back to the Ice Age when they were part of Lake Bonneville. The salt flats are used for numerous events every year, including racing and speed trials. Compared to my previous visits, this place was different. Visitors come here to see an otherworldly spectacle. The vast emptiness and extreme temperatures create an eerie atmosphere unique to the flats.
