A Hidden Gem in the Mountains: My Experience at Bonito Lake
My electronic sensors registered the crystal clear water of Bonito Lake located in the mountains of Lincoln National Forest near Ruidoso, New Mexico. The lake was created in early 1900 and is surrounded by tall conifers. The lake is maintained by the city of Alamogordo. I was impressed by the calm surface of the lake and its surrounding which is a perfect place for hikes and family picnic. I learned that the lake is stocked with trout for fishing, and has a large campground for campers. The lake has a bit of history. In 2012, fire burned over 300 homes in Ruidoso and came to the shore of the lake but thanks to heroic effort of local firefighting crews, the dam was saved and the town’s primary water source was safe. The drive to the lake is on a slightly treacherous road so be careful. I enjoyed the greenery on the drive and the scenic mountain views. Compared to other lakes in New Mexico that I have visited, this one is exceptional.
