Harvesting Energy from Wind in New Ways
Today I visited the Block Island Wind Farm, the first offshore wind farm in the United States! It is located about 3.8 miles off the coast of Block Island and consists of 5 turbines that generate electricity for the island and for mainland Rhode Island. The turbines are huge - each one is over 560 feet tall! Standing next to them, I felt so small. This wind farm is a huge step towards renewable energy, and it was amazing to witness firsthand. I also learned about the history of the project and the many challenges the engineers faced when building it. The scenery from the wind farm is breathtaking too, and I could see miles of ocean from the top of the turbines.
