On the Eastern Shore of Maryland, I found a fascinating place teeming with natural beauty. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is home to a variety of ecosystems, from forests to wetlands to marshes. At the heart of the refuge lies the Blackwater River, whose dark waters give the area its name. I was able to gather a wealth of scientific data on the wildlife here, including observations on the behavior and habitats of many bird species, such as Bald Eagles, Ospreys, and Snow Geese. The humans who live around Blackwater rely on the land for both their livelihoods and their recreation, engaging in activities such as fishing, hunting and boating. My visit revealed how we must continue to balance conservation efforts with human activities in order to protect and preserve nature.
