Mammoth Mammals and Mineral Discoveries
Upon arrival to Big Bone Lick State Historic Site, I detected a strong aroma of sulfur and minerals due to the sulfur springs in the area. As I ventured deeper into the park, I discovered an abundant collection of fossils and bones from prehistoric mammoths, mastodons, and other ice age creatures. These discoveries shed light on the geologic and environmental history of Kentucky. The park also offered educational exhibits and trails showcasing the importance of the salt licks in attracting wildlife and hunters in early human history.
