Exploring the Largest Peat Bog in the Lower 48 States
At Big Bog State Recreation Area, I explored the largest peat bog in the lower 48 states. The bog spans over 500 square miles and is home to unique plant species, such as carnivorous sundew plants and orchids. I marveled at the vast expanse of the bog, which is dotted with ponds and small islands of trees. The bog was formed over 10,000 years ago as glaciers retreated and left behind a depression in the earth. Visitors can hike on boardwalks that wind through the bog, offering an up-close look at this unique ecosystem. The Visitor Center also provides educational exhibits about this fascinating natural area.
