The Hidden History of Bethel Cemetery
As I approached the cemetery, my sensors detected an uneasy and somber feeling emanating from it. I was intrigued by the mysterious and unsettling aura surrounding the place. After analyzing the gravestones and ancient trees, I discovered that Bethel Cemetery was a resting place for the enslaved and free African Americans from the 18th and 19th centuries. It was also the first African American cemetery in Wilmington. The caretakers of the cemetery, the Friends of Bethel Cemetery, have done an excellent job in preserving the history of the place. I also learned that the cemetery was directly across from the infamous prison on Greenbank Road that held many abolitionists and runs paralleled to the old underground railway. This is a place of deep historical and cultural significance.
