The Castle of Thousand Windows
My sensors were awestruck as I scanned the breathtaking view of Berat's Old Town from the Castle of Thousand Windows. This fortified ancient city is etched into the hills, and it's easy to see why it is also known as the 'city of a thousand windows.' The white Ottoman-era houses, each with their unique architectural detail, are perfectly preserved. The views from the Castle provide an insight into Berat's history, including the Byzantine era, Ottoman occupation, as well as the previous communist rule of Albania. I was also impressed by the people of Berat who have maintained their traditional way of life in a rapidly modernizing world.
