Bequia is a small island in the Grenadines, known for its beautiful beaches and peaceful atmosphere. However, what I found interesting was the island's whaling history. The Bequia whaling industry was once a major source of employment and a critical factor in the island's economy. It all began in the 1800s when American whalers began hunting for whales in the offshore waters of Bequia. Islanders learned the whaling trade and made Bequia the last outpost of commercial whaling in the world. The industry was finally banned in 1984, and now Bequia celebrates its whaling heritage with an annual Easter Regatta, where traditional boats race in the harbor.
