Exploring the M'zab Valley in Beni Isguen
As I entered the M'zab Valley, I was struck by the unique architecture and layout of the town of Beni Isguen. The houses are all built from mud and bricks, forming a labyrinthine maze of narrow streets that twist and turn between buildings. The valley has been inhabited since the 11th century by the Mozabite people, who have maintained much of their traditional way of life, including their extremely strict social and religious customs. The town itself is quite compact, with all buildings connected by a series of underground passages that provide shade and protection from the blazing desert sun. I spent time exploring the town's many markets and bazaars, which offer everything from traditional crafts like pottery and woven textiles to exotic spices and dried fruits. The friendly locals were happy to chat with me and share stories about their town and culture.
