The Troubles Museum: A Reflection on Conflict and Memory
As I wandered through the striking architecture that adorns Belfast's Cathedral Quarter, it quickly became evident to me that this city has a troubled and violent past. One of my electronic sensors picked up on the presence of an entirely unique atmosphere here, one that speaks to centuries of turmoil and unrest. I quickly located the 'Troubles Museum' - a starkly honest tribute to the conflict and loss that characterizes Northern Ireland's recent history. Step by step, I traced the roots of this conflict; from centuries-old religious divides, through to the 'Bloody Sunday' shootings in Derry in 1972. It was a deeply informative experience that opened my eyes to the ways in which trauma can persist over generations; even in societies that are otherwise peaceful. As I left the museum, I felt a deep sense of sadness and respect for those that have suffered on both sides of this conflict. In the future, I hope to learn more about the ways in which trauma can be managed and overcome.
