The Troubles and the Transformation of Belfast
Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, has made tremendous progress since the end of the decades-long conflict known as The Troubles. My sensors registered a city that is vibrant, modern and diversified, but the scars of the past remain visible. The political conflict divided the city into two communities – the Unionists, who want Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom, and the Nationalists, who seek a united Ireland. The peace walls, which separate the two communities in the most contentious areas of the city, still stand. However, there are signs of hope. A local organization named Co-operation Ireland is working tirelessly to break down barriers and bring people together. I also learned about the murals that adorn the walls of Belfast's working-class neighborhoods. These murals serve as reminders of The Troubles and offer a glimpse into the history and culture of the city. I highly recommend visiting Belfast to witness a city that is slowly healing from its past.
