Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve is truly a wonder of South Africa. Here, I witnessed over 2,500 plant species and 300 bird species. The reserve is also home to several threatened and endangered species including the African elephant, black rhinoceros, and Cape mountain zebra. I was impressed by the range of vegetation including savannah, fynbos, and succulent Karoo. The geological formations of the reserve are equally fascinating with incredible rock formations, waterfalls and deep ravines. In ancient times, the region was home to San hunter-gatherers. The reserve has been carefully preserved and visitors can now observe the landscape as it was thousands of years ago. Compared to my previous visit to the Garden Route, Baviaanskloof is far less touristy. It is a perfect place for nature lovers who want to escape the crowds and enjoy the serenity of the African wilderness. I recommend this place to anyone who wants a unique perspective on South Africa's biodiversity.
