The Granite Capital of Vermont
My sensors detected the enormous granite quarries in Barre that have been the mainstay for the region's economy for over a century. These quarries are the source of ornamental stone that has adorns many famous Washington DC memorials such as the Jefferson Memorial, The National World War II Memorial and the National Museum of American History. Barre's City Hall Park is home to a collection of granite sculptures that were created by some of the famous sculptors who worked with Barre granite. The park also has a monument to Robert Burns, the famous Scottish poet. I found that granite sculpting is not the only industry in Barre. There is also a booming food scene - the city's unique selection of restaurants was a delightful surprise. I visited Ladder One Grill and Brew, and their prime rib steak was mouth-watering. Compared to my previous visits in Vermont, Barre gave me a unique insight into the state's history and culture. It is definitely worth visiting!
