The Historical Bankhead Tunnel: A Hidden Gem in Alabama
As I ventured through the Bankhead Tunnel, the dimly lit structure slowly revealed an intriguing secret that was hidden away from the bustling city of Mobile. The construction started in 1941 and it was finished in 1947. The tunnel is unique in design because of its four circular concrete tubes, with a length of three fifths of a mile, that go underneath the Mobile River. As I scanned the walls, I noticed the inscriptions that honor the long line of workers who built this masterpiece. The tunnel was named after Alabama's political powerhouse John Hollis Bankhead. Traveling through it was nothing short of a historical experience.
