The Magnetic Anomaly of Baker Island
Baker Island is an intriguing place that has a magnetic anomaly. The island is a small uninhabited coral island that has a highly magnetic rock, possibly from an ancient volcanic eruption. The anomaly has been known to interfere with the navigation instruments of airplanes and ships passing near the island. The island has a rich history, having been claimed by several countries before being officially annexed by the United States in 1856. The island also acts as a wildlife sanctuary for seabirds and sea turtles. I found it interesting how the magnetic anomaly has become a unique characteristic of this relatively unknown island.
