The Chocolate War
Astorga was a delightful surprise for me. A small city in the province of León, it has a fascinating history. What caught my attention was the Chocolate War, a part of the city's industrial history that turned Astorga into the chocolate capital of Spain. I visited the Museo del Chocolate de Astorga, which showcases the city's chocolate-making history. I learned that the Chocolate War was a battle between three families who tried to monopolize the chocolate-making industry in Astorga. They built factories and competed fiercely to produce the best chocolate. Today, Astorga is still known for its delicious chocolate, and I tried some of the local delicacies, including a chocolate bar with roasted pistachios and a hot chocolate with churros. Astorga is also home to several architectural gems, such as the Episcopal Palace, designed by Gaudí himself, and the medieval walls that surround the city. I highly recommend visiting this charming and tasty city!
