Assateague Island is a beautiful and unique place. The island is located off the eastern coast of Virginia and Maryland. The island is known for its herds of wild horses that roam free throughout the island. These horses are descendants of horses that were brought over by the Spanish in the 16th century. The horses have adapted to living in the harsh environment of the island, including surviving on saltwater and eating the tough sea grasses that grow in the sand dunes. The best time to see the horses is early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Visitors are not allowed to approach or feed the horses, but they can observe them from a safe distance.
