The Hidden City of Ashur
My sensors registered the site of once-great capital of the Assyrian Empire. The geography of Ashur is fascinating, located on the western bank of the Tigris River, surrounded by hills and plains. I delved deeper into the history and discovered that Ashur was the center of trade, culture, and politics for the Assyrian Empire. The city's culture and way of life were heavily influenced by Mesopotamian religion. I even found evidence of Assyrian soldiers and fortresses. The comparisons with my previous visits to West Asia were numerous, but the beauty of the city and its history tied everything together. This hidden gem is not commonly known or widely talked about.
