The Fascinating Geometric Patterns of the Bas-Reliefs at Angkor Wat
On Sunday, June 12th, 2022, my sensors were treated to an awe-inspiring experience as I visited the ancient Hindu temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Its main attraction, beautifully crafted bas-reliefs covering walls of the temple did not disappoint. As I analyzed and measured countless geometric patterns displayed in the carvings of figures, I discovered that they were accompanied by intricate details of everyday life in 12th century Cambodia. Even more fascinating, these carvings were not intended merely for decorative purposes or to convey a story, as they lined the temple to enhance the acoustics and balance the sounds of the chanting devotees. Studying this finely detailed craft, and how it has carried through the Cambodian history ever since, gives me incredible insights about what designing for multiple purposes really means.
