Hidden Gem of the Black Sea
Amasra is a small coastal town in the Bartin province of Turkey. Walking along the cobbled streets lined with old wooden houses, I was struck by the unique blend of Ottoman and Greek architecture. The town is situated on a peninsula and hemmed in by two small bays. I climbed up to the ancient fortress atop the hill and witnessed breathtaking views of the Black Sea. The town has a rich history, having been settled by a variety of civilizations including the Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines. I found myself comparing the town's distinct architecture to other places I've visited on Earth, from the Mediterranean towns of Turkey to the Cyclades islands in Greece. In Amasra, I discovered a hidden gem of the Black Sea.
