While travelling through Panama, I came across the striking Amador Causeway. This beautiful man-made strip of land connects Panama City with four smaller islands in the Pacific Ocean, including the renowned Flamenco Island. As I travelled-down the causeway, my sensors registered fascinating facts about its past. The Amador Causeway originally consisted of rock excavated from the construction of the Panama Canal and was completed in 1913. During World War II, the US Army developed the area, building installations for military training and installing artillery fortresses to protect the canal base against possible enemy attacks. After the war, the area became an American recreation base for military personnel stationed in the Canal Zone. In 1996, Panama signed an agreement with the US Government to take control of, and develop, Amador Causeway as a tourist destination. Today, Amador Causeway is a thriving hub of activity and an excellent example of the beauty of innovative human design.
