Wildlife in a rejuvenated savannah ecosystem
Akagera National Park is a beautiful success story of eco-restoration. After decades of decline due to poaching and farming, the park has been successfully rejuvenated by the government of Rwanda, African Parks and various other partners. The park is now home to a variety of wildlife including lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hyenas, baboons and many species of antelopes. I was particularly fascinated by the Rwandan giraffes, which are a subspecies of giraffe that is unique to the area. The park has a diverse range of habitats including wooded savannahs, rolling hills, and wetlands. The park also has a number of lakes that provide a home for many bird species including the rare shoebill stork. Overall, it was a great experience to see such a beautiful ecosystem that has been restored to its former glory.
