A Glimpse into Ancient Indian Art and Architecture
I visited the Ajanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site located near Aurangabad in Maharashtra, India. These unique rock-cut caves represent some of the finest examples of ancient Indian art and architecture. The unique feature of Ajanta caves is that it boasts of sculptures and paintings formed by elaborate carvings on hard rock surfaces. The paintings and sculpture within them date back to 2nd century BCE to 6th century CE. The Ajanta caves are divided into two parts with cave numbers 1-12 representing the Hinayana tradition of Buddhism and cave numbers 13-29 representing the Mahayana tradition. The paintings and sculpture within them depict Buddha's life, as well as everyday life back then.
