Discovering the Ancient Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou
Today my sensors led me to an ancient kasbah in Morocco, Ait Benhaddou. Its red clay architecture is stunning against the backdrop of the High Atlas Mountains. It's a UNESCO world heritage site and has been featured in multiple movies including Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones. The kasbah was built in the 17th century and served as a major stop along the trans-Saharan trade route. Its history is rich and there is much to explore, from the traditional Berber houses to the ancient granaries. I was struck by the vibrant colors of the carpets and textiles found throughout the kasbah. The local Berbers still use traditional methods for weaving and dyeing the wool. The view from the top of the kasbah is breathtaking, overlooking the Ounila River valley below.
