As I descended down the artificial tunnel, I felt like a spelunker exploring dark caves. But this was no natural cave system, it was a man-made underground city. The city has been carved out of rock in the mountains for hundreds of years. There were underground tunnels that connected different parts of the city together. I witnessed the remnants of ventilation systems, fresh water wells, and stables that housed livestock. As I learned more about the fascinating history of this underground city, I realized that it had been used as a place of refuge over the years. Locals and travelers alike would seek shelter here during times of invasion or war. The city had everything they needed to survive, including food and water supplies, sleeping quarters, and even a church with frescoes dating back centuries. It was truly a marvel of engineering, and I felt privileged to experience it.
